Sponsored by North Quabbin Chamber of Commerce, features sales, demonstrations, and information on outdoor equipment and gear for paddling, biking, hiking, and more in the North Quabbin region. 8 Tuesday, 7:00 pm. Building the New Route 2 at the Westminster Historical Society , 110 Main Street, Westminster. Route 2 was built to bypass the center of Westminster in the mid 1960’s. Many homes were moved, and families were displaced. We’ll map the location of the houses and road before Route 2 was built and find out what happened to the families. Refreshments will be served and the public is always invited.
10 Thursday, 6:30 pm. Live Birds of Prey with Tom Ricardi at the Gardner Museum, 28 Pearl St., Gardner. Tom Ricardi brings his live raptors to the Museum. These birds are from the Massachusetts Bird of Prey Rehabilitation Facility. Refreshments served at 6:30 pm. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Call 978-632-3277.
11 Friday, 8 pm. Quartetto Gelato: Neapolitan Nights at Weston Auditorium, Fitchburg State College. Classical in intent, eclectic by design, Quartetto Gelato not only thrills its audiences with the mastery of its classical instruments—violin, clarinet and cello, but offers the wonderfully unexpected bonus of a brilliant operatic tenor and the piquant verve of the bandoneon! 12 Saturday, 9 am – 2 pm. Michael Tougias, Dana Common Hike at Quabbin Reservoir. Join Active by Nature as they hike to Dana Common with Michael Tougias, famed author of “History and Explorer’s Guide to Quabbin.” Learn interesting facts about the Quabbin Reservoir and what was once known as the Swift River Valley. Included is lunch at the quaint Petersham Country Store and a visit to the Swift River Valley Historical Society. 12 Saturday, 4:30 – 6 pm. Swedish Meatball Supper at First Church of Templeton, on the Common, Route 2A, Templeton. The family-style supper includes freshly prepared Swedish meatballs, vegetable, beverage, and a piece of homemade pie for dessert. Tickets $8 per adult, $4 per child, children under 5 free. 12&13 Saturday, 1 pm & Sunday, 10 am. 45th Annual River Rat Race sponsored by the Athol Lions Club. Come cheer the hardy paddlers in the 45th running of the race as they battle from Athol to Orange for prize money and bragging rights. The start is a must-see, as 300 canoes shoe-horn their way under a bridge for the best position on their way downstream. Sunday features a pro race, along with amateur class, youth, adult and kayak races from Orange, where the Saturday race ends, to Athol. 17 Thursday, 7 pm. Great Scot, It’s Andrew Carnegie at the Boylston Historical Society, 7 Central St., Boylston. Local actor Richard Clark brings the controversial Andrew Carnegie to life. Rising from humble beginnings to become the “King of Steel” and the richest man in the world, Carnegie was called “the greediest little devil that ever lived.” Yet he gave away billions of dollars to build libraries. 26 Saturday, 8 pm. Sonya Kitchell at Weston Auditorium, Fitchburg State College. Massachusetts’ own extraordinary Sonya Kitchell brings her jazz-inspired folk and pop sound to CenterStage for a special night with the young singer-songwriter. Known for the mature emotional depth of her songwriting and her ability to weave the elements of jazz, R&B, folk and other roots forms, Kitchell is of a new generation of singer-songwriters ready to take on the world. Defying classification, Kitchell’s sound pays great tribute to a number of singers before her—Ella Fitzgerald, Carole King in her dusky alto, Joni Mitchell in her lyric wispiness.
