Below is a list of what is going on in Johnny Appleseed Country during the month of August. If you are aware of an event that is going on in our region that is not listed here, email it to us, we will be glad to put it on for all our visitors to see!
1 Sunday, 11 am – 5 pm. Polish Picnic at the Otter River Sportsman’s Club, Lord Road, Otter River. Polish food starting at 11am, and Polka band from 1-5pm. For more information, call 978-939-4824.
1 Sunday, 10 am – 3 pm. Gardens of Orange and North Orange sponsored by the Athol Bird and Nature Club. Tours of local gardens. Tickets ($5/person or $15/carload) available at Noel’s Nursery, North Quabbin Woods and Educare. Presented with help from the North Quabbin Garden Club.
6-7 Friday, 9 am – 7 pm and Saturday, 9 am – 4 pm. Experience Gardner Summer Festival and Sidewalk Sale. Downtown Gardner turns into a pedestrian mall filled with vendors, entertainers, raffles, games for the kids and more.
7 Saturday, 11 am – 4 pm. The Beast of the East Massachusetts State Chili Cook-Off at Bentley Field, Winchendon. Cooks from across the nation compete for the state title to qualify for entry into the world chili championship. Enjoy chili tastings, music, games and family fun. Call 978-297-1815.
7-8 Saturday & Sunday, 11 am–3 pm. Magician Weekend at Davis’ Farmland, 145 Redstone Hill Rd., Sterling. You never know what will happen next. Fun for parents and kids alike! Show times at 11 am and 2 pm. Call 978-422-MOOO.
8 Sunday, 10 am - 8 pm. Wachusett Valley Folk Festival at the Wachusett Village Inn, 9 Village Inn Rd,, Westminster. Artists include Ashbrook Haynes, Brooks Williams, Don White, Maeve, Mustard’s Retreat, Pesky J. Nixon, Susan Werner, and Vance Gilbert. Tickets $25 in advance, $30 after August 1, $90 VIP. 11-15 Wednesday–Sunday. Bolton Fair at The Fairgrounds at Lancaster, Route 117. An old-fashioned agricultural fair with animal shows and contests, an exhibit hall, entertainment, fireworks, and an expanded midway. “Midway preview night” on Wednesday, fair opens Thursday. 13-14 Friday & Saturday, 8 pm. Broadway Sensation at Theatre at the Mount, 444 Green St., Gardner. If you believe in “true love” you’ll “walk down the aisle” with excitement for our summer musical spectacular! Due to contract requirements and a national tour this winter, we can’t tell you the title just yet. Call 978-632-2403. Repeats Aug. 20-22.
15 Sunday, 2 pm. “Birthday Party” at Top Fun Aviation Toy Museum, 21 Prichard St., Fitchburg. Katharine and Orville Wright were both born on August 19, though not the same year, and the Museum first opened to the public on August 19, 2000. Each year, the Museum celebrates these “birthdays” on the Sunday closest to the 19th. Call 978-342-2809.
15 Sunday, 2 pm. Concert by Erin’s Melody at Coggshall Park, Electric Avenue, Fitchburg. Free admission. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the concert on the bandstand at Mirror Lake. Rain Dates July 25, August 22.
19 Thursday, 3 pm. Magic by Scott Jameson at theLeominster Public Library, 25 West St. This lively, interactive program involves magic, music, juggling and lots more! Free and suitable for all ages. No registration required.

21-22 Saturday & Sunday, 9 am–5 pm. Arts and Crafts Festival on the Common, Routes 2A and 101, Templeton. The 36th annual presentation of this popular outdoor craft show includes over 100 crafters, entertainment, food, raffles, children’s activities.
28 Saturday, 10 am - 4 pm. Yankee Street Fair at First Congregational Church, 138 Main St., Ashburnham. Held for the past 65 years, the Yankee Street Fair offers food, games, a silent auction, bargains, entertainment, and the always-popular strawberry shortcake. Call 978-874-5790 mornings.
