3 Thursday, 8 am – 5 pm. Longsjo Race Rindge Road Time Trials. A series of 10 km time trials starting at Rindge Road and Scott Road in Fitchburg, Various categories of racers begin the time trials throughout the day. Details at www.longsjo.com.
3 Thursday, 5 – 9 pm. First Thursday Block Party on Main Street, Fitchburg. With a theme of “Civic Days,” the block party welcomes visitors to downtown. Monthly series sponsored by the mayor’s office. Call 978-345-9602.
3 Thursday. Sundown Concerts with the Concord Band every Thursday evening in July at Fruitlands Museum, 102 Prospect Hill Road, Harvard. 4 Friday, 9 am. Wachusett Mountain Road Race. The second day of racing in the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic. Riders start at the Wachusett Mountain Ski Area, off Princeton Road (Rt. 31), and follow an 11-mile hilly course to end at the summit of the mountain in Day 2 of the four-day world classic Longsjo event. 4 Friday, 10 am. Fourth of July Parade on Main Street, Fitchburg. Parade route runs from Summer Street to the Upper Common. Bands, antique cars and more! Fireworks at dusk.
4 Friday, noon. Reading of the Declaration of Independence at First Church on the Common, Templeton. This re-enactment of the readings that took place all across the Commonwealth soon after the signing is a powerful patriotic statement. Reading is accompanied by our national anthem and God Bless America. An ice cream social will follow at the Narragansett Historical Society .
4 Friday, 7 pm. Orange Community Band Concert in Butterfield Park, East River Street, Orange. Free admission. Refreshments.
5 Saturday, 8 am – 4 pm. Fitchburg State College Circuit Race, starting on Highland Avenue in Fitchburg. In this third day of the Longsjo Classic, racers in various categories compete on a 3.1 mile loop in the city. Races continue through the day. Details at www.longsjo.com.
5 Saturday, 10 am Independence Day Parade, Main Street, Ayer. Entertainment and festivities all day, fireworks at dusk.
5 Saturday, 2:30 – 4:30 pm. Tea in the Garden at the Narragansett Historical Society building, on the Templeton Common (Route 2A). Enjoy tea and light refreshments served by members of the Historical Society in the lovely gardens. Admission for tea is $4. Free tours of the building from 1 to 5 pm Saturdays and Sundays. 6 Sunday, 8 am – 4 pm. Downtown Criterium Race on Main Street and Boulder Drive, Fitchburg. In this final day of the four-day Fitchburg Longsjo Classic, the largest pro-am cycling event in North America. Races begin with the Junior Men at 8 am and proceed throughout the day; the Women’s Pro race is at 2 pm and the Men’s Pro at 3:30 pm. 6 Sunday. Into the Woods at Fruitlands Museum, 102 Prospect Hill Road, Harvard. These festive kids free family days will mix entertainment, crafts, and storytelling with learning about trees and the many creatures and people who count on them. 6 Sunday, 3 pm. Concert on the Templeton Common, Route 2A, Templeton. The Narragansett Community Band, directed by Stephen Babineau, will perform at the bandstand on the common. Free admission. Bring lawn chairs and enjoy!
9 Wednesday, 6:30 pm. Concert on the Common, Main Street, Fitchburg. This series of concerts on the Upper Common, across from the Post Office, is sponsored by Workers Credit Union, the Massachusetts Cultural Alliance and Fitchburg Recreation Department. 10–13 Thursday –Sunday, 8 pm. Gone with the Gust youth theater performance at Barre Players Theater, 64 Common St., Barre. For ages 7 – 14. Lone Pine Filmis going to make a movie of Lucy Belle Bankhead’s new novel Gone with the Gust. The producers pretend that they are looking for an “unknown” to play the part of the heroine in order to keep their famous but temperamental star in line. The scheme appears to work initially but then problems crop up everywhere with hilarious results. Ticket prices: general $14, seniors 65 $12, students $10, children $7.
