Below is a list of what is going on in Johnny Appleseed Country during the month of May. If you are aware of an event that is going on in our region that is not listed here, email it to us, we will be glad to put it on for all our visitors to see!

1 Thursday, 5–9 pm. First Thursday Block Party on Main Street, Fitchburg. With a theme of “The Circus,” the block party welcomes visitors to downtown. One in a monthly series sponsored by the mayor’s office. Call Ellen DiGeronimo at 978-345-9602 for details.

4 Sunday, 10 am –5 pm. Daffodil Show at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston. 508-869-6111.

4 Sunday. Into the Woods at Fruitlands Museum, 102 Prospect Hill Road, Harvard. These festive family days will mix entertainment, crafts, and storytelling with learning about trees and the many creatures and people who count on them. Kids admitted free; must be accompanied by an adult.Visit fruitlands.org, or call 978-456-3924. Repeats monthly.

5 Monday,
7:30 pm. Annual Spring Choral Concert at Weston Auditorium, Fitchburg State College. Concert Featuring the Fitchburg State College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers. Free admission.

8 Thursday, 6 – 8 pm. The History of Brewing Beer at the Gardner Museum, 28 Pearl St., Gardner. Rick Walton of the Gardner Ale House presents this program, complete with beer samples. Members free, non-members $3. Call 978-632-3277.

10 Saturday, 10 am – 4 pm. The 7th Annual Sholan Farms Apple Blossom Festival at Sholan Farms, 1125 Pleasant St., Leominster, celebrates the advent of spring in the Central Massachusetts region as evidenced by the blooming of the apple trees. The family-oriented festival, which features children’s activities, crafters, pony rides, music and food, is a civic celebration organized and operated by the Friends of Sholan Farms. 10 Saturday, 4:30 – 6 pm. Turkey Supper at First Church of Templeton, on the common, Route 2A, Templeton. The family-style supper includes freshly prepared roast turkey, vegetable, beverage, and a piece of homemade pie for dessert. Tickets $8 per adult, $4 per child, children under 5 free. 10 Saturday, 8 pm. Rory Raven, master mentalist, at Bull Run Restaurant, Route 2A, Shirley. Neither psychic nor magician, Raven is a master who has been astonishing audiences for over a decade. $12 in advance, $16 day of show. Call 978-425-4311.

10&11 Animal Makeover Weekend at Davis Farmland, 145 Redstone Hill Road, Sterling. Come help us makeover some of our furry Farmland friends and on Sunday, Mother’s Day, you can even makeover your mom. Call 978-422-MOOO.

11 Sunday, 4 pm. Historical Piano Concert: the Arcadia Players Chamber Ensemble at the Ashburnham Community Church, Main Street (Route 12), Ashburnham. The chamber ensemble will perform the Trio in F for piano, flute and cello, Hob XV:17 by Haydn; Sonata for piano and violin in A, Op. 12, No. 2 by Beethoven; 7 Variations on Mozart’s “Bei Mannern, welche Liebe fuhlen” by Beethoven; and Selections from Ten Scottish Songs by Carl Maria von Weber, with symphonies and accompaniments for the flute, violin, violoncello and pianoforte. The piano, made c. 1805-1810 by Katholnig of Vienna, is from the Frederick Collection of Historical Grand Pianos. $10 adults; children and students free. Contact Patricia Frederick, 978-827-6232.

13 Tuesday, 6:30 pm. Gaywing’s Wildflower Wall at the Westminster Historical Society, 110 Main Street, Westminster. Eunice Arcangeli and Mary Bassett will lead an easy walking tour on a path to Bickford’s Pond in Hubbardston and point out the wildflowers on the way. Meet at the society at 6:30 pm to carpool to Hubbardston. 978-874-5569.

17 Saturday, 9 am - 2 pm. The Shirley Volunteer’s semi-annual Town-Wide Yard Sale. Just about any road — Route 2 (exit 36), 2A, 225, Leominster, Lancaster or Townsend – will lead you there. Rain date, at individual’s option: May 18.

17 Saturday, 10 am. 5th Annual Rabbit Run, 10K Race and 3-Mile Walk at New Salem Common, New Salem. This fun race begins in the beautiful, historic center of New Salem and continues through the protected lands of the scenic Quabbin Reservoir. Named for the discontinued railroad line that made “hops” through the Quabbin Valley on its way from Athol to Springfield until 1935. Registration at 9am. 17&18 Heroes Weekend at Davis Farmland, 145 Redstone Hill Road, Sterling. There are fire trucks and equipment to climb on. Free child ID kits. ALL Firefighters, police officers, armed forces personnel and their families are admitted FREE! (ID required.). Call 978-422-MOOO.

18 Sunday, 2 pm. “Go Fly a Kite.” At Top Fun Aviation Toy Museum, 21 Prichard Street, Fitchburg. There is a $2 per kite materials fee in addition to the regular admission ($5 for an adult, which includes one child free). Participants will decorate and assemble a simple kite. Kids as young as 3 can successfully complete the workshop with a little help. Weather permitting, nearby Riverside Park is a great place to test your new creation. At about 3:30 a staff member will take anyone who is interested to the park for flying lessons. Call 978-342-2809.

18 Sunday, 4 pm. Historical Piano Concert: Dmitri Shteinberg, pianist, at the Ashburnham Community Church, Main Street (Route 12), Ashburnham. Scherzo Op 4 in eb by Johannes Brahms; Gesange der Fruhe, Op. 133, by Robert Schumann; variations on a theme by Schuman, Op 9, by Brahms; Four Ballades Op. 10 by Brahms, and Ballade Op. 52 in f by Frederic Chopin. Performance on a piano made in 1846 by J. B. Streicher, Vienna, from the Frederick Collection of Historical Grand Pianos. $10 adults; children, students free. Call Patricia Frederick, 978-827-6232.

24&25 Construction Expo Weekend at Davis’ Farmland, 145 Redstone Hill Road, Sterling. One of our best events! Kids can climb on construction equipment and even operate a backhoe. It’s every child’s dream! At Davis’ Farmland, adults must be accompanied by a child 12 years or younger. Call 978-422-MOOO.

24&25 Saturday, 7:30 pm, and Sunday, 4 pm. Historical Piano Concerts: A Schubert Weekend with Pianist Dmitry Rachmanov at the Ashburnham Community Church, Main Street (Route 12), Ashburnham. Two programs of music by Franz Schulbert. Rachmanov will select a Viennese piano made during or soon after the composer’s lifetime, from the Frederick Collection of Historical Grand Pianos. $10 adults; children and students free. 30&31 Friday & Saturday, 8 pm. The Dresser at the Stratton Playhouse, 60 Wallace Ave., Fitchburg. This West End/Broadway hit seriocomedy is about an aging Shakespearean actor and the personal assistant who struggles to keep his charge’s life together. Tickets, $15; call 978-345-6066 for reservations. Repeats June 6-8 and 13-15.

31 Saturday, 9 am – 2 pm. Annual Country Fair and Flea Market at First Church of Templeton, on the common, Route 2A, Templeton. Features a variety of attractions and events, including vendors of flea market and craft items, bake sale, plant sale, raffles, classic car show, special kids’ events, food galore, and more!
